“As One” is performed in English with supertitles and it features a string quartet with Duluth’s Erin Aldridge and Mary Alice Hutton on violin David Arnott on viola and Betsy Husby on cello.
“As a trained classical singer and as a trans person and a member of our Duluth community, this is the first time I’m going to an opera to see a story similar to mine on a stage,” Hakes said. It developed into a status symbol, but opera is supposed to be accessible art that tells real stories - which is what “As One” does. While it has pushed the boundaries, its stories are often still of cisgender heterosexuals, so this is unique, said Mark Hakes, a Hannah Before understudy and production consultant.
